Downloading your Plugin

The easiest way to get started is to download your plugin from our Downloads Center, which hosts all of the installers for our plugins.

To keep things simple, all expansion pack installers are included in the core installers for their specific plugin platform. You only need to download the core installer.

Installing your Plugin

To install, extract the .exe or .pkg from the download file (if you system doesn't automatically). Next, run the installer, clicking through the steps. Be sure to grant any permissions your system prompts you for, such as access to your microphone (this allows the plugin to input audio to your system).

If the install fails, please contact our support team.

Unable to connect to License Server

If you are receiving an activation error, please make sure that you have a stable internet connection and that you do not have any firewalls or proxies blocking your system from connecting to our server.

For offline systems, you can hotspot to a cellular device momentarily in order to connect to the server and activate the license.

What you need?

The hardware required to run our plugins is similar to any digital recording setup. Namely, you will need:

Computer:

Mac or Windows. Laptop or Desktop. We do not currently support mobile operating systems.

Audio Interface:

This is how you get your signal into your computer. Most standard audio devices are supported.

A few brands recommended by our users: Focusrite, Audient, Universal Audio, RME

Monitoring:

Some way to listen back to your audio device. This will typically be studio monitors hooked up to your interface, or headphones plugged into your interface.

Guitar:

For a guitar plugin, you'll want something to play. You can plugin in through the hi-z input on your interface, or into a DI box into your interface.

Supported Operating Systems?

We currently support the following Mac & Windows versions. We do not support mobile operating systems

Mac:

Minimum: Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra

Current: Mac OS 13 Ventura

  • AmpHub, ControlHub, ToneHub, and Tonality - Josh Middleton can all operate natively on Apple Silicon systems. The rest of our plugins run under Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon.
  • Apple recently classified macOS Sierra as End-of-Life. Older builds of our plugins may work on Sierra; however, we cannot guarantee compatibility with Sierra moving forward.

Windows:

Minimum: Windows 7+

Current: Windows 11

Formats Available

Our plugins are currently available in the AU, AAX, VST2, and VST3 formats.

How to update?

You can update your plugin by clicking on the update notifier in your plugin, or by heading directly to our downloads center

To update, simply run the latest installer, which will update your plugin while keeping files such as your presets in place.

How to uninstall?

To uninstall, please delete the plugin data from your system. You can find file locations here. For our amp plugins, you will additionally want to delete the standalone apps from your applications folder.

Licensing your Plugin

For activating via the STL Licensing system, please check this article.

Only Libra uses iLok activations.

You do not need an iLok dongle; simply a free iLok account, and the iLok License Manager software, where all of your licenses are managed.

Full Licenses

You will need to manually redeem your activation code in License Manager and activate the license. You can find your activation code in a separate email we send after your purchase from our SendOwl service.

With your code in hand, login to License Manager, and click the "Redeem an Activation Code" button at the top right of the app (the icon with 2 dots)

This will open up a window for you to type your activation code into.

Enter your activation code here and click next. iLok will then prompt you for a location to activate the license too. We recommend activating to your computer or an iLok dongle.

If you encounter any activation issues, make sure that you are running the most up-to-date version of iLok License Manager.

Multiple Computers

Each license comes with 3 concurrent activations, which can be managed in iLok License Manager.

To use a plugin on a different computer, you need to download and install the plugin, then sign into iLok License Manager and activate the license from your "Available" tab.

Recommended Settings for Standalone

When first using your plugin, these are the recommend settings for getting up and running. You can access these settings by clicking into the Audio IO menu in the standalone plugin.

Feedback Loop:

Uncheck this box once you are setup to unmute the plugin.

Audio Device Type (Windows only):

This must be set to ASIO for low-latency, high-fidelity audio.

Input / Output:

Set your input and output to your desired device, typically your audio interface.

Active Output Channels:

Presets, Traces, Manual, Changelog

The contents of your plugin will be installed to your documents folder:

Documents/ STL/

Do not remove the Preset Banks or Trace files from this folder, or offload this folder onto cloud storage, or else your plugin may not function normally.

To share a preset bank between computers, you can copy the .bank files into the Banks folder on the second system.

Missing Presets

On newer versions of MacOS, a security setting can block your DAW from properly loading the presets from their default folder, which can cause an "empty" plugin.

1. Go to System Preferences>Security&Privacy>Privacy>Files & Folders

2. Scroll down the list to find your DAW.

3. Check the box to make sure your DAW has access to your Documents folder, which is where your presets are stored.

Additionally, make sure that you are not using Cloud storage for storing your documents folder, as the files located at Documents/STL must be stored locally for your presets to appear.

No Sound in Plugin

If the plugin is not receiving an input signal:

1. Click on your AUDIO IO settings and confirm that your audio interface is selected as your input and output (and device type set to ASIO for Windows),  and that your routing matches the routing on your interface (e.g. Input channel 1 is enabled if your guitar is plugged into channel 1).

2. Confirm that your routing is correct on your interface and that you have suitable input gain, as well as any "Direct Monitoring" disabled.

3. Mac Only - go to System Preferences>Security and Privacy>Privacy>Microphone and confirm that your plugin app has access to the Microphone by checking the box.

If you see input, but don't hear any output:

1. Go to you AUDIO IO menu and confirm that "Mute Audio Input" is disabled, and that your output channels are enabled.

2. Confirm that your output on your audio interface is enabled.

If you only hear your clean tone:

1. Disabled any "Direct Monitoring" on your audio interface.

Garageband Plugin Not Scanning

There is a confirmed error with Garageband 10.4.5 on Monterey that causes our plugins to show Fatal Errors or be listed as unavailable on your computer.   We are currently working with Pace and Apple to find a solution.

We have a workaround to allow plugins to run by disabling the Mac GateKeeper. Please contact support for assistance.

Where are my pack installers?

All packs are built into the core ControlHub installer.

What is included in my purchase?

Your purchase of the ControlHub plugin provides access to the plugin and the Core Pack that includes 117 presets captured using many popular hardware and software signal chains. A list of included presets is available on the ControlHub product page. It also includes the free packs: the Destroyer, the Glue, and the GM Parametric EQ.

All other preset packs are an additional purchase.

Will a pack work without the core plugin?

No. All preset packs load in the ControlHub plugin itself, so a copy of the core plugin is required.

My preset packs aren't loading

If your preset pack isn't loading, or you are seeing the activation error message, please follow these steps.

1. Confirm that you have downloaded and installed the latest version of ControlHub

2. Confirm that you have activated the pack in the plugin.

3. Make sure you are not using any sort of Cloud storage for your documents folder (such as iCloud).

4. Mac Users: head to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Privacy > Files & Folders and make sure that your DAW has access to your documents folder.

5. Confirm that you have not moved the "Banks" or "Traces" folder from "Documents/STL/ControlHub". If you have, either move the folders back,  or reinstall the plugin & your preset packs.

Why Can't I Bypass the Amp or Cabinet?

The tracing of the original signal chain is built into ToneHub's primary design. Since these are the core components of the snapshot of the signal chain, you cannot bypass them. Instead, you can use the tracing amplifier in the plugin's GUI to modify the base signal's parameters, as well as the 3D Cabinet Mixer to adjust that cabinet's IR settings.

Where are my individual model installers?

All packs are built into the core AmpHub installer.

Will a model work without the core plugin?

No. All preset packs load in the AmpHub plugin itself, so a copy of the core plugin is required.

What is the difference between the installers?

AVX: is meant for most newer Windows computers and Intel based Macs from 2013 that use the AVX instruction set. If your plugin is crashing, your system likely does not support AVX.

non-AVX: is meant for systems that cannot run the AVX version of the plugin, as well as Apple Silicon Macs that are running under the Rosetta translation layer.

Apple Silicon: is meant for Apple Silicon computers running natively.

CONTROLHUB TRACER

WHAT IS THE TRACER?

The ControlHub Tracer is an add-on for the ControlHub plugin that allows users to capture entire signal chains all on their own. This means you can capture preamps, equalizers, compressors, limiters, and more in any combination.

WHAT IS A TRACE?

A trace is what we call the captured signal chain. It's saved as a preset that you're able to load up in ControlHub to use, and to share on our new Trace Exchange platform.

HOW DO I ACCESS / ACTIVATE THE TRACER?

If you are a ControlHub Pro subscriber or a ControlHub Expansions subscriber, you simply need to update to the latest version of the plugin. Since the update is free, the new Tracer and Trace Exchange sections will be unlocked in the main navigation menu.

If you are not a subscriber and prefer to own outright, you will first need to purchase and activate the core ControlHub plugin, and then purchase and activate the Tracer add-on to gain access to the Tracer and Trace Exchange.

HOW DO I MAKE A TRACE?

When you open the Tracer tab, you will have two options: Complete Signal Chain or individual Compressor

Using Complete Signal Chain is best for capturing preamps, EQ, and compressors that are intended to be used as a full chain.

The Compressor trace allows you the flexibility to load that compressor model into an existing preset, and also capture the characteristics and color of an individual compressor.

Complete Signal Chain

1. Click Complete Signal Chain to begin the setup.

2. Locate the Tracer Tone audio file by clicking the Locate button, then import the file into your DAW.

It is important to make sure the sample rate and bit depth of the Tracer Tone audio file and your session is marched. Most DAWs will automatically convert the Tracer audio file on import; however, please be aware these settings need to be the same for the Tracer to function correctly.

3. Run the Tracer Tone audio file from your DAW out through your desired signal chain.

For best practices on creating optimal traces, please see the bottom section of this article.

4. Import your processed (100% wet) Trace Tone audio file by clicking the Import button.

The Tracer analyzes the imported audio and prepares the file for tracing. You will be prompted on the audio levels of your processed file to let you know if the Tracer is receiving optimal levels.

5. Click either Trace Mono or Trace Stereo to begin the Tracing process.

Mono tracer presets can still be used on stereo audio files and vice versa.

6. Save your Trace!

Here is where you can tweak any of the modules to further customize your preset. For example, you can increase the color module circuits to more closely match your reference track's complex saturation/distortion, or add ControlHub modules not in your original chain to take your preset to another level.

Once you hit save, you will be prompted to input the metadata for your preset.

Compressor

1. Click Compressor to begin the setup.

2. Locate the Tracer Tone audio file by clicking the Locate button, then import the file into your DAW.

WHERE ARE MY PRESETS SAVED?

Your Complete Signal Chain presets are saved in the Tracer Presets folder in the navigation menu. Clicking the tab enables the drop-down menu where you can manage your presets.

Your individual Compressor models are saved in the Tracer Compressors folder in the navigation menu.

You can also locate your compressor models in the My Tracer Compressors folder located in the updated compressor modules drop-down menu.

HOW DO I SHARE MY TRACES?

You can share your Traces using our Trace Exchange.

Here are our guidelines for getting the best result from the ControlHub Tracing Technology:

  • Avoid digital clipping! Do not exceed 0 dBFS. Aim for a target level of around -3 dBFS at the loudest peaks of the Tracer Tone audio file.
  • Extreme deliberate clipping/distortion may produce unwanted results.
  • No wet/dry parallel blends. Must be the 100% wet processed signal. Tip! Trace only the parallel signal chain and use the ControlHub mix knob to blend in the 100% wet parallel preset.
  • Moderate threshold and gain reduction settings (-3db to -12db gain attenuation on the loudest parts of the Trace Tone audio file).

And here are our guidelines for the best results for training a Compressor:

  • 20ms Attack Time, 100ms Release Time, 4:1 ratio
  • Moderate threshold and gain reduction settings (-3db to -12db gain attenuation on the loudest parts of the Trace Tone audio file).
  • Avoid digital clipping! Do not exceed 0 dBFS. Aim for a target level of around -3 dBFS at the loudest peaks of the Tracer Tone audio file.
  • Avoid lookahead options in compressors and limiters.
  • No Mid/Side processing.
  • No wet/dry parallel blends. Must be the 100% wet processed signal.
  • Avoid internal side chain filters and optional distortion circuits.

Note: these suggested settings are for optimal ControlHub training purposes. You can still achieve great results with more extreme settings. Remember, after tracing is complete, feel free to adjust the compressor settings to dial them in further before saving.

Here are some further recommendations to get the best out of the Tracer:

  • Avoid heavily distorted signal chains. It is possible for the ControlHub Tracer to match these presets; however, be aware it is not how it is intended to be used. Tip! Use the Color module to add more drive to your chain by using the Pre EQ to push into the Color module's circuits.
  • ControlHub is not able to trace time-based effects such as delays, reverbs, tremolo/phase effects, doubler, and stereo-width enhancing tools.
  • ControlHub cannot trace Expanders/Gates. We recommend bypassing these processing when tracing as it may affect optimal training results.
  • If compressor stacking (e.g. 1176 into a LA2A) the ControlHub Tracer analyzes this as one compression stage, so keep in mind that the resulting ratio and threshold may be higher than you expected.

Getting Started with the Tracer
